Tumbbad is an Indian horror fantasy movie that is extremely gripping and keeps you glued to the edge of your seat with its morally ambiguous characters and mysterious storyline. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that this movie isn’t as much a horror film as it is a psychological thriller. Having said that, let’s analyse the various other facets of Tumbbad.

- Story — 4.5/5
- Acting — 4/5

Tumbbad (2018) Review — A Deep Dive
A distinct feature of older Bollywood movies, especially from the ’60s to the ’80s, is that they always had a moral message for the masses; Tumbbad feels like a distinct call-back to that era but with a modern twist.
This movie has done an excellent job of weaving together elements of mythology, horror, and allegory with breathtaking cinematography and a haunting score. Plus, it uses the emotion of greed to fuel the plot’s suspense, making it truly unique.
Tumbbad’s anti-hero, Vinayak, is the very embodiment of greed, and it is in his very pursuit of the treasure that belongs to Hastar, the demon, that the film builds a palpable tension and sends chills down your spine. There aren’t any jumpscares, but frankly, when the story is that good, there aren’t any gimmicks needed.
The narrative and visual design derives heavily from Indian folklore, which helps Tumbbad set itself apart from other Indian horror movies that usually stick to formulaic plots, cheap scares, and over-the-top special effects. Plus, when you consider this Rahi Anil Barve’s directorial has been credited for leading the way for other experimental horror films in modern India, it becomes clear that Tumbbad genuinely has something different to offer.
Given that the director had a close to 700-page storyboard, it should come as no surprise that Tumbbad boasts amazing art and breathtaking cinematography. However, I did feel as though Hastar’s visuals could have been improved; the creature seems like he was made from the same tech as video games in the ‘90s, and that feels like a disservice to the monster that is at the core of the story.
Sohum Shah’s acting also deserves a round of applause. From Vinayak’s initial curiosity and desire for a better life to his descent into madness and obsession with Hastar’s treasure, Shah has nailed each aspect of his complex character and carries the film throughout.
Tumbbad Plot Overview
Set primarily in the remote village of Tumbbad (in Maharashtra), the story revolves around Vinayak Rao, a young man who becomes obsessed with the legendary treasure hidden within his family’s ancestral mansion. However, Vinayak’s quest for wealth becomes increasingly perilous as he delves deeper into the labyrinthine tunnels beneath the mansion to claim the riches for himself.
